The El Camino was so closely related to the Chevelle that everything from the windshield forward was largely interchangeable throughout both cars' generations, and engines were shared. Chevy introduced a longer El Camino in 1968, based on the Chevelle station wagon/four-door sedan wheelbase, it also shared Chevelle Malibu exterior and interior trims. Chevrolet marketed the vehicle as a utility model and Chevelle's most powerful engines were not available. Chevrolet reintroduced an all new, mid-size El Camino in '64 based on the Chevrolet Chevelle. Production resumed for the 1964-1977 model years based on the Chevelle platform, and continued for the 1978-1987 model years. Introduced in the 1959-1960 model years in response to the success of the Ford Ranchero pickup, its first run lasted only two years. Named in Spanish for 'The Path', Chevrolet El Camino is a coupe utility/pickup vehicle that was produced by Chevrolet between 1959-87. Built to provide modern reliability and a streetable driving attitude, this 396 El Camino sits just right and it drives like the dream it is.
